Pensacola Beach is a community located on Santa Rosa Island, a barrier island on the Gulf of Mexico in Escambia County. As of the 2000 census, Pensacola Beach's population is 2,738.
Features
Pensacola Beach is bordered by Santa Rosa Sound to the north, the Gulf of Mexico to the south and by the Gulf Islands National Seashore to the east and west. The community is connected to Pensacola on the mainland via bridges. Pensacola Beach is on land bound by a 1947 deed from the U.S. Department of the Interior that says the land is to be administered to the public or leased, but never sold, so all residents here are leaseholders, not property owners. Interesting houses can be found on the island, including the “Spaceship House,” a home with a UFO-shaped 2nd floor and the “Dome of a Home,” shaped out of concrete to withstand hurricane winds.
Attractions
On the north side of community is a beach boardwalk across from Casino Beach. Many concerts are held at the seashell-shaped stage at the Boardwalk. Along the Boardwalk is a quiet beach and a free boat dock. On the Boardwalk is where most events are held, including the Lobster Fest, Bushwhacker Fest and the Independence Day fireworks. Fort Pickens was used until World War II and was the famous holding place of Geronimo. Today, self-guided tours through the historic quarters are available. The fort also houses an auditorium, museum and visitor center. Not much further along are many scenic trails, campgrounds and miles of protected beaches.
Education
Pensacola Beach is home to 1 school: Pensacola Beach Elementary School, for children in kindergarten through grade 5. The schools enrollment is between 120 and 140 students and has been recognized as a grade “A” school in the state with the title of 5 Star School. In 2001, the elementary school was severed from the Escambia County School District and has since become a chartered school. Other schools can be found across the water under the Escambia County School District, including the nations 8th-best high school, Pensacola High School. Nearby in Pensacola is the University of West Florida, ranked by the Princeton Review to be the best college in southeastern America.
